The week ahead: Vintage, Visions & Vibes, ComicCon, Kiwanis Shrimp Feast


From family-friendly festivals to free fall concerts, here's what's happening in the Historic Triangle this week, Sept. 9 - 14.

The week ahead: Vintage Visions & Vibes, ComicCon, Kiwanis Shrimp Feast

From free concerts to family-friendly festivals and food-themed fundraisers, another event-filled week is on tap for the Historic Triangle. 


James City County is gearing up to host a Vintage Visions & Vibes Festival on Saturday at Jamestown Beach Event Park.


Open to all ages, the event will feature a vintage and collectibles market, a classic car show, children's activities, artisan demonstrations and live music by the band London. Parking is $10 per car.


ComicCon is set to return to Williamsburg Library and the Stryker Center this week. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a cosplay costume contest, shop vendors, learn about taiko drumming and meet talented local authors. All ages are welcome, and admission is free.


Seafood lovers can support good causes while enjoying great food on Saturday at the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club's 44th Shrimp Feast at Jamestown Settlement or the annual Oyster Roast at Watermen's Museum. 


On the local music scene, New Town Tunes returns this week with Hangar 09 (classic rock) and The Connection (blues, rock and folk).


Meanwhile, the Port Warwick Summer Concert Series will host its season finale featuring swing band Good Shot Judy, and the Peninsula Concert Band will perform at Williamsburg Library Theatre.


Rhythms on the Riverwalk continues in Yorktown with KOS Band. A premier Virginia dance band, the ensemble has played at a wide variety of events, including performing for presidents and senators, for the past 40 years.


Finally, Howl-O-Scream is back at Busch Gardens this week and will run through Nov. 2. Parental discretion is advised after 6 p.m. this year as the later-evening programs "contain amplified scares not recommended for children," according to the park.

  • Teen Tuesday | James City County Library | Teens are invited to attend a STEAM-themed learning program every Tuesday. This month's themes are sewing, painting and leather stamping. For ages 13-18. Free. 10 am - 12 pm. 


FILM

  • Art House Café: "Agent of Happiness" | Williamsburg Library Theatre | This film series brings an art house flavor to your Tuesdays and features special guests who are film experts. This week's film is Agent of Happiness (2024), a documentary that follows pollster Amber Kumar Gurung, who travels the kingdom of Bhutan to interview citizens for a government survey of happiness. 1hr 33min. Free admission. 2 - 3:40 pm.

SENIORS

  • Protecting Your Personal Information Online | James City County Library | Learn how to stay safe online during this one-hour lecture that covers creating strong passwords, identifying Spam and Phishing and shopping online securely. No registration required. This program is geared toward seniors (age 60+). Free. 11 am - 12 pm. 


KIDS

  • Advanced Lego Club | James City County | Children are invited to participate in a 6-session program to build their LEGO engineering skills. Two courses are available: an 11 am session for ages 5 - 8 and a 1 pm program for ages 9 - 12. Registration required. Free


AUTHOR TALK

  • Virtual Author Talk: Argue Less and Talk More | Virtual | Attend an online author talk with communication expert Jefferson Fisher. The author will discuss a tried-and-true framework that will show you how to transform your lives and relationships by improving your conversations. Register virtually at libraryc.org/wrl. Free. 2 - 3 pm.


GARDENING

  • Intro to Native Plants | Freedom Park | Learn about planting perennials in the fall. Discover some of the plants that are native to our area and view small gardens that have been planted and seeded. Ages 18+. Free. 6:30 - 7:30 pm. 


LIVE MUSIC

  • New Town Tunes: Hangar 09 & The Connection | Sullivan Square in New Town | The New Town Tunes Fall Concert Series continues this week with performances by Hangar 09 (Classic Rock) and The Connection (Blues, Rock & Folk). Bring lawn chairs or a blanket. Dogs are welcome. Free. 5 - 8 pm. 


  • Port Warwick Summer Concert Series: Good Shot Judy | William Styron Square | Newport News | The Port Warwick Summer Concert Series runs every Wednesday through Sept. 10. Local food vendors will be on site. This week, the series concludes for the season with Good Shot Judy. Weather-permitting. Free. 6 - 9 pm. 


  • Dewey Decibel Concert Series: Peninsula Concert Band | Williamsburg Library | The Peninsula Concert Band performs a broad range of music including patriotic medleys, marches, contemporary show tunes, classic orchestral music and traditional works for concert bands. No tickets required. Free. 7 - 9 pm.

NATURE

  • Stream to Sea Stroll | York River State Park | Embark on a hike to a small woodland and marsh stream, freshwater pond and brackish/saltwater river. Park staff will capture and identify different crustaceans and fish while discussing the park's plant life. Included with park admission. 10 am - 12 pm. 

KIDS

  • Tyke Hike | York River State Park | This program is designed for little ones who are beyond crawling but aren't ready to hike with Kindergarten siblings. The hikes are stroller-friendly and less than a mile. Included with park admission. 2 - 3 pm. 

  • ABC Explorers | Tabb Library | Children will explore skills for learning and enjoying reading through story time, poems, crafts, games and singing. Free. 4:30 - 5:15 pm. 

FILMS

  • Throwback Thursday: "Roman Holiday" | Williamsburg Library Theatre | This series screens classic films for an adult audience. This week's film is "Roman Holiday" (1953, NR), a story about a sheltered princess who sneaks away for a day-long adventure touring Rome with an American newspaper reporter. Featuring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. 1hr 58min. Free. 2 - 4 pm. 

  • Celtic Film Series: "Cinderella Man" | Williamsburg Library Theatre | The Celtic Film Series runs the 2nd Thursday of the month, Sept. 25 through May 2026. This week's feature is "Cinderella Man" (2005, PG-13), featuring Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, and Paul Giamatti under the direction of Ron Howard.  2hrs 24min. Free. 5:30 - 8 pm. 

LIVE MUSIC

  • Rhythms on the Riverwalk with KOS Band | Riverwalk Landing | Historic Yorktown's popular fall concert series continues this week with KOS Band. Known as Virginia's premier dance band for over 40 years, this powerhouse ensemble plays beach music, Motown classics, Top 40 hits, and tunes from the '60s to today. The group has played for presidents, senators and at a wide variety of events. Free. 6:30 - 8:30 pm. 


  • Organ & Harpsichord Recital: Rebecca Davy | Bruton Parish Church | Enjoy a program of harpsichord and organ music presented by Rebecca Davy, music director and organist. Free; donations gratefully accepted. 8 - 9 pm.

KIDS & FAMILIES

  • Up, Up, & Away Storytime | Waltrip Williamsburg Executive Airport | Children are invited to enjoy an all-ages storytime at the Waltrip Williamsburg Executive Airport, 100 Marclay Drive. Free. 10 - 11:30 am. 


  • Once Upon a Cuento | Yorktown Library | Children will enjoy fun stories, songs and activities in English and Spanish. Free. 10:15 - 11 am. 


  • 4-H Scholars Meet & Greet | James City County Library | This program allows participants to learn what 4-H is about; explore topics in STEM, agriculture, arts and civic engagement; and meet other local families. For ages 8 - 14 and their families. Free. 1 - 4 pm. 


ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

  • ELL Book Group | Williamsburg Library | This book group is designed for those who speak English as a second language. Advanced registration required. For ages 16+. Free. 10 - 11 am. 


LIVE MUSIC

  • Coffee Concert: Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony | Ferguson Center for the Arts | Kick off your Friday with an hour-long concert by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony takes the listener on a transformative journey from struggle to triumph. Complimentary coffee and muffins will be available in the lobby starting at 10 am. The concert will run from 11 am - 12 pm. Tickets are $15 - $41. 


  • Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony + Cellist Jan Vogler | Ferguson Center for the Arts | World renowned cellist and prolific recording artist Jan Vogler joins the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for one of the most acclaimed cello concertos of the 21st century. The concert begins at 7:30 pm; a pre-concert chat will begin at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $15 - $135.

SPECIAL EVENTS

  • Summer Forage to Feast: Pawpaws | New Quarter Park | Learn to identify, harvest and prepare pawpaws: Virginia's largest native fruit. Participants should bring comfortable walking shoes, snacks, water, insect repellent and light food prep. Scan the QR code here to register. 10 am - 2 pm. Free.

  • Vintage, Visions & Vibes Festival Weekend | Jamestown Beach Event Park | Attend a family-friendly festival open to all ages. This event will feature a show by the band London, a vintage and collectibles market, a classic car show, artisan demonstrations, a kid zone and more. Parking is $10/car. Saturday, Sept. 13, 11 am - 4 pm. 


  • Watermen's Museum Oyster Roast | Watermen's Museum | This annual fundraiser features oysters, clam chowder, hot dogs, sides, desserts and more. For tickets, call (757) 887-2641 or email admin@watermens.org. Active military and museum members receive a $5 discount. Kids 5 and under may join for free. Regular admission is $45 in advance, $50 at the gate. 12 - 3 pm. 

  • ComicCon | Williamsburg Library & Stryker Center | Attend WRL's third annual ComicCon. Attendees can show off their cosplay in a costume contest, participate in trivia, shop vendors, learn the art of taiko drumming and meet talented local authors. All ages welcome. Free admission. 12:30 - 4 pm. 

  • Kiwanis Shrimp Feast | Jamestown Settlement | This fundraiser features all-you-can-eat shrimp, coleslaw, hush puppies, hot dogs, beans, water and soda. Live music will be performed by BrassWind. Admission is $40 for adults, $20 for children 6-12. Children under 6 are free. 4 - 7 pm. 

  • Friends of the Library Paint Night Fundraiser | Yorktown Library| Attend an evening of creativity and relaxation. This adults-only event is for painters of all skill levels. Participants can unwind while following guided instructions to create their own masterpiece. Tickets are $40 each and include all supplies and an optional glass of wine. 7 - 9 pm.

KIDS & FAMILIES

  • Walk & Talk | New Quarter Park | Attend a free guided nature hike led by interpretive staff. Participants will enjoy the sights, sounds and experiences of this beautiful park. Free. 10 am. 

  • Story Time | New Quarter Park | This fun program features a storytime activity for kids ages 2 - 5. No registration is required. Free. 10 - 12 pm. 

  • Super Shoreline Exploration | York River State Park | Join park staff and Girl Scouts of America on a hunt for prehistoric relics at a fossil beach and modern marine life in the living shoreline. Included with park admission. 10 am - 12 pm. 

  • Portraits of Jamestown Family Day | Jamestown Settlement | Children will create a family portrait with a green screen and participate in other portrait-related activities. Included with museum admission. Admission is free for residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg with proof of residency. 10 am - 4 pm. 

  • 3D Sculpture | James City County Recreation Center | Kids ages 7 - 13 will be introduced to the world of 3D art and sculpture using fun, safe and creative materials. See the website to register. $25. 10 am - noon. 

  • Geocaching 101 | Freedom Park | This introductory course teaches children about the hidden world of geocaching. See the website to sign up. For ages 9 - 16. $10. 9 am - noon. 

  • Pop-N- Play: Read & Roll | Abram Frink, Jr. Community Center | Kids ages 6-12 are invited to play classic arcade and board games, ride roller racers and find out how many classic picture books they can read in 30 minutes. Free. 10 am - 1 pm. 

  • Campfire Social | Chickahominy Riverfront Park | Celebrate summer with an old-fashioned campfire gathering featuring s'mores, activities, storytelling and more around the campfire. Free. 6:30 - 7:30 pm.

  • Williamsburg Farmers Market | 345 W Duke of Gloucester St. | Shop from the finest Virginia-grown and Virginia-made produce, plants and products. This farmers market features over 40 vendors, live music and children's programming. Rain or shine. Free admission. 8 am - 12 pm. 


  • Yorktown Market Days | Riverwalk Landing | This market features seasonal produce; fresh baked goods; meats; honey; eggs; glassware; leather goods; handcrafted artwork; and much more. This week, Dead Rise will perform on the Riverwalk Landing Stage. Free admission. 8 am - 12 pm.

  • VSO Up Close: Schubert's Cello Quintet | Ferguson Center for the Arts | Celebrate the inaugural performance of Franz Schubert's final piece of chamber music. Virginia Symphony Orchestra music Director Eric Jacobsen will perform as the iconic extra cello that gives this quintet its name, "The Cello Quintet", alongside world renowned cellist Jan Vogler. General admission is $39; $15 for students. 3 pm.

Sunday, Sept. 14

KIDS

  • Paws to Read | Tabb Library | Kids will have fun practicing their reading skills while reading aloud to a trained therapy dog. Participants may bring their own books or choose one from the library to read. Registration required. This program will be offered at 1:30 - 2:30 pm and 3 - 4 pm. Free.

  • Sensory Movie | James City County Library | This special movie screening, held in a sensory-friendly environment, is geared toward young children and those with special needs. Popcorn will be provided. Free. 2 - 4 pm. 


STREET FESTIVAL

  • 2nd Sundays Williamsburg | Downtown Williamsburg | This street festival features more than 190 unique artisans, musicians, performers, food vendors and a beer/beverage garden. Free admission. 11 am - 4 pm.

SEASONAL

  • Howl-O-Scream | Busch Gardens Williamsburg | Howl-O-Scream returns Sept. 5 to Nov. 2. The event will feature five haunted houses, six terror-tories, four sinister shows and more. Parental discretion is advised after 6:00 PM, as this year's event contains amplified scares that are not recommended for children. Sesame Street Forest of Fun, Land of the Dragons and all other kid attractions will close nightly at 5pm to prepare for Howl-O-Scream. 


KIDS

  • Buddy Art | James City County Recreation Center | In this fun program, children ages 6+ with disabilities will have the opportunity to participate in art activities based on age, ability and interests. Children are assigned a volunteer buddy to work with them one-on-one.  For more information, click here.  Saturdays, Sept. 6 - 27, 3 - 4 pm. Free


HISTORY

  • Music in the Galleries | Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg | Become immersed in 18th-century music from members of the Governor's Musick Ensemble while strolling through the galleries. Tuesdays through Saturdays in September, 11 am - 12 pm. Free and open to the public.


  • The Weight of Liberty | Military Encampment | Participants will assist soldiers of the 2nd Virginia Regiment and serve as a matross as they haul a "great gun" into position in front of the Public Magazine. Daily in September. Requires CW admission or a Good Neighbor Pass. 12 - 12:30 pm. 


  • The Promise of Freedom | Duke of Gloucester Street (near Charlton Stage) | In November 1775, a proclamation declaring martial law was placed on Virginia. Join the Williamsburg community as they confront the fallout. Daily in September. Free and open to the public. 4 - 4:30 pm. 


YOGA

  • Yoga for All | Jamestown Beach Event Park | Celebrate National Yoga Month with a series of free community yoga events. Sessions will take place weekly on Thursdays through Sept. 25, 5:30 - 6:30 pm. See the website to register. Ages 5+. Free


ART

  • Williamsburg Artists Group Exhibit | Stryker Center | Stop by and view an exhibit by the Williamsburg Artists Group (WAG), a group of visual artists who share their work with the greater Williamsburg community. Free. Sept. 2 - Oct. 3. 


HOMESCHOOLERS

  • Homeschool Family Days | Jamestown Settlement/American Revolution Museum | Homeschool families are invited to take advantage of a special rate ticket for both Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown. The ticket provides unlimited admission to both museums during Homeschool Family Days, Sept. 6 - 14, 2025. The cost is $19 per adult, $10 per student. 


  • Homeschool Days | Colonial Williamsburg | Homeschoolers are invited to step into the 18th century with hands-on history and expert guides who bring the past back to life. Students and their families will receive a special discounted rate, Sept. 6 - 21.
