Returning to Richmond
Less than a month ago, Virginia belatedly passed a biennial state budget. As you likely recall, the delay stemmed from the Governor's insistence on a provision to expand Medicaid in the Commonwealth. Despite the Governor's maneuvering, the General Assembly passed a clean budget that did not include language permitting Medicaid expansion.

Throughout the arduous budget debate, my Republican colleagues and I repeatedly insisted on calling a special session to debate Medicaid expansion. For reasons outlined in my previous newsletters, I remain unconvinced that expansion is the best option for Virginia. I am, however, committed to thoroughly reviewing the matter and hearing all arguments. A special session dedicated exclusively to discussing Medicaid expansion is the ideal opportunity in which to hold this debate.

As such, I am pleased to share that the Republican leaders of the House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate plan to call the General Assembly into session during the week of September 22. At that time, we will fulfill our promise to analyze all aspects of expansion. Undistracted by threats of a government shutdown, we will be able to fully focus on the facts surrounding the proposal to expand Medicaid.

I look forward to engaging in this debate and also to hearing your feedback during the upcoming weeks. I take seriously my responsibility to represent your concerns, and I appreciate your active participation in the legislative process.
Thank you for your support
On June 19, over 100 guests joined Speaker Howell and me for a fundraising reception at the historic Hornsby House Inn in Yorktown. A providential thunderstorm cooled the day's scorching temperatures and ushered in a comfortable evening. Thanks to your support, I enjoyed an extremely successful fundraiser...not to mention a fun event the company of good friends! Thank you to all who attended or made a contribution in support of my campaign. I am humbled by your support.
Congratulations to Mike Watson!
During 2012 and 2013, I had the privilege of sitting beside Mike Watson on the floor of the House of Delegates. I learned to admire and trust Mike as a man of his word, a natural leader, and a humble public servant. Like you, I was extremely disappointed by the outcome of last year's race for the 93rd House of Delegates seat.

I am excited, however, to learn about Mike's new role as coordinator of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Subcommittee. Mike's business acumen and legislative background make him a natural fit for this position. While I miss serving with Mike in the House of Delegates, I look forward to working with him in this new capacity. Congratulations, Mike!

Independence Day 2014

Yorktown, Virginia. Those of us who are blessed to reside in the Historic Triangle often take this quaint town for granted. Annually, we participate in the 4th of July parade, spend the afternoon at Yorktown beach, and cap our day by viewing an impressive display of fireworks.

Over 230 years ago, though, the fireworks were all too real. Just beyond Yorktown's historic streets stand centuries-old redoubts, reminders of the conflict that marked the birth of our great nation.  Far from peaceful, Yorktown in 1781 was the site of a pitched battle between British forces and the Continental Army.

At the time, the British army was viewed as the greatest military on earth, while the Continental Army was cobbled together of untrained Americans supported by French forces. Despite these incredible odds, the Continental Army prevailed, toppling the British military and forcing Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown.

Bravely and with great faith, our forefathers declared independence on July 4, 1776. Five years later at Yorktown, the promise of Independence Day was realized. As we enjoy July 4 festivities with friends and family, may the true significance of Independence Day be remembered and celebrated.

From my family to yours, Happy Independence Day!

Sincerely,
