Delegate Mike Watson Newsletter

Letter from Mike:

Friends,
As you are aware, the General Assembly officially wrapped up the 2012 session around 1:30 am on May 15th.  Our last order of business included votes on budget amendments, judicial appointments and last minute resolutions.   Unless we are called back for a special session, of which there is some discussion, we will report back to Richmond in January 2013.

With few exceptions, the recent ‘End of Session Letter’ that we sent out covers the majority of the final results of our work in Richmond, so I will not readdress it here.  However, there is at least one very meaningful issue that has been passed since my letter that offers an incentive to port related employers.  We will cover that in more detail later in this newsletter.  Over the summer, I will continue working on several initiatives, some of which will have an impact within the next year, while others may take more time to realize.  These initiatives relate to topics such as business development, education, and transportation.  I will do my best to keep you updated as we make gains in these areas.

Danielle Woolston wins Outstanding Youth Award for Compassion

May 17, 2012

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Grafton High School senior Danielle Woolston received the 2012 Outstanding Youth Award for Compassion from the York County Board of Supervisors.
Danielle is widely admired and respected for her sincere compassion and concern for others, as evidenced by her more than 500 hours of community service. She has been active in such programs as the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughter's "Change Bandit" program where she encouraged area schools to collect spare change to donate to the hospital. She has volunteered as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, served almost 300 volunteer hours as an athletic trainer at Grafton, and volunteers yearly with her family in support of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.
Danielle also serves on the worship team at Water's Edge Church and volunteers each summer at Northside Christian Church's vacation bible school. She also participated in their summer mission trip to Ohio where she painted houses, cleaned yards and befriended the elderly. The summer after her sophomore year she volunteered in Bogota, Columbia, where she helped work at an orphanage and cleaned and painted a school following storm damage. She has also served as Grafton's Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Captain for the past two years, helping to collect over 5,000 pounds of food and more than $1,800 in cash to support local food banks.
Danielle's compassion is also demonstrated on a personal level. She was deeply moved by the passing of one of her friends, Holly Shapiro, who died last July from complications of leukemia. To keep Holly's memory alive and help support Holly's family, Danielle set out to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by advertising the society's annual Light the Night walk. She also organized the sale of spirit links during homecoming week and spearheaded a project to sell "Team Holly" t-shirts in school, all of which resulted in the Grafton High School community donating $1,200 in Holly's name to the society.
"Danielle is a strong role model," said nominator and FCA co-sponsor Jared Van Acker. Her many hours of community service "were not completed to fatten up her college resume, but because she enjoys giving her time and talents to others who may be less fortunate."

Drew Bentley wins Outstanding Youth Award for Courage

May 17, 2012

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Grafton High School senior Drew Bentley received the 2012 Outstanding Youth Award for Courage from the York County Board of Supervisors.
As a young, bright, sports-minded 15-year-old, Drew began experiencing acute joint pain and was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a progressive arthritis and chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the vertebrae and can result in severe pain and stiffness of the spine, knees, hips, ribs and shoulder joints. There is currently no medical cure for the disease, which can frequently produce episodes of excruciating pain, as well as nausea and fatigue.
Drew was suddenly confronted with the numbing physical, mental and emotional challenges of coping with this disease and its uncertain prognosis. His recommended medical treatment now includes a strict regimen of IV infusions every six weeks, a weekly injection Drew administers himself, and taking numerous pills each day in the hope of slowing the rate of the disease's symptoms and effects.
Drew's doctors encouraged him to stay active, since regular exercise and movement is beneficial for his joints. Rather than letting this obstacle overwhelm him, Drew quietly determined from the outset to face his challenges head on and work to pursue his goals. Drew has excelled academically, is a member of the National Honor Society, was named Grafton's Senior of the Month last December, and has volunteered in a variety of school-sponsored service projects such as food drives, the Toys for Tots program, and the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation's "Think Pink Day." Through his treatment plan, Drew has also continued to play lacrosse and football, where he has been a four-year letterman on Grafton's Varsity team and played as a starting Offensive Guard this year.
"If you did not know that Drew had this disease, you wouldn't know it by meeting him either," said one of his nominators and Grafton's Fellowship of Christian Athletes co-sponsor Deborah Wright. "He does not allow others to treat him differently, nor does he ask for special treatment, but fights through this with courage. He is a determined young man who has been a strong role model for many and who truly believes that all things are possible."

Eddie Kuster wins Outstanding Youth Award for Community Service

May 17, 2012

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

York High School junior Eddie Kuster received the 2012 Outstanding Youth Award for Community Service from the York County Board of Supervisors.
Eddie has consistently demonstrated a genuine desire and commitment to serve others, and makes the time to do so in spite of his demanding academic schedule at York High, where he has earned a 4.2 grade point average. Eddie is active in several national honor societies and on York's Varsity Scholastic Academic Challenge Team and swims competitively on both York's varsity and the Coast Guard Blue Dolphins swim teams.
Despite all this, Eddie has still found the time to donate almost 600 hours of his time to others. He has collected money for leukemia patients, supported needy children, participated in a blood drive, raised funds in support of those with diabetes, worked at the Virginia Special Olympics Swim Meet and volunteered every summer with the York County Public Library. He is also an Eagle Scout who has served as both a Senior Patrol Leader and a Troop Guide.
Ever since the summer before his 9th grade year, Eddie has volunteered as a 4H-Peer Teacher at the Yorktown Victory Center, where he serves as an 18th Century Costumed Interpreter working at the military encampment. In this role, Eddie teaches visitors about life as a Continental Soldier, including demonstrating how to fire a flint-lock musket, using flint and steel to start fires, and giving colonial medicine demonstrations.
"Eddie is a great all-around kid, always polite, always cordial, always willing to help others," said his York High Principal Antonia Fox. "He's just a very solid person and citizen."

Hard lesson! Don't forget it!
Subject: History Lesson...

If you cannot go to the polls then choose to do an absentee ballot and have your ballot mailed to you and do it by mail.

There are no longer excuses for
not going to the polls on election day.

I am passing this on because I never knew this. I was not taught this in school or anywhere else. It is a piece of history you all might be interested in knowing...

Subject: A History Lesson on WHY Women CAN Vote in 2012

A TRUE STORY EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW!

This is the story of our Mothers and Grandmothers who lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

(Lucy Burns)
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

(Dora Lewis)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his
guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

(Alice Paul)
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's movie 'Iron Jawed Angels.' It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the
actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

(Berthe Arnold, CSU graduate)

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said. 'What would those women think of the way I use, or don't use, my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.' The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'

HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco/Bingo night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing,
but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party - remember to vote.

Helena Hill Weed, Norwalk , Conn. Serving 3 day sentence in D.C. prison for carrying banner, 'Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.'

So, refresh MY memory. Some women won't vote this year because - Why, exactly?
  • We have carpool duties?
  • We have to get to work?
  • Our vote doesn't matter?
  • It's raining?
  • I'm so busy...I've got so much on my plate!
Read again what these women went through for you! We can't let all their suffering be for nothing.
