While many Virginians finalized their taxes yesterday, the General Assembly returned to Richmond for the reconvened session. Also known as the "veto session," the reconvened session is the time at which the House and Senate convene to consider the vetoes and amendments offered by the Governor.

Unsurprisingly, Governor McAuliffe vetoed many of the bills that I supported or co-patroned this year. Among those bills is House Bill 1752, legislation restricting adoption of Common Core standards in Virginia. Also vetoed by the Governor was House Bill 1626, the "Tebow Bill."

Overriding a veto requires a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate. I am disappointed to report that the House failed to override the Governor's veto of the "Tebow Bill." Likewise, although the House cast a bipartisan vote to override the Governor's veto of HB 1572, the Senate failed to act similarly. For this reason, neither bill will become law.

I received numerous emails supporting both bills, and I thank all of you for your advocacy. I anticipate this legislation will again be introduced in future years, and I will continue working to ensure their passage.
Not quite finished...
Because the General Assembly was unable to finish consideration of the Governor's actions, we will return to Richmond on Friday. On our agenda will be review of the Governor's amendments to the ethics legislation. During this time, we will adopt the $100 aggregate limit on gifts, thereby concluding a productive 2015 General Assembly session.

Around the District
Since returning to Williamsburg in early March, I've enjoyed the opportunity to meet with constituents and attend events throughout the district. Recently, I chatted with Trey Phillips and his mother, Erika. Trey is vice president of the Student Council Association Hornsby Middle School, and Erika is a Williamsburg-James City County teacher. We are blessed with excellent schools in our region, and I appreciated learning about their involvement and leadership.
