County wins "Best New Special Event" at annual conference

York County Parks, Recreation and Tourism won an award for the "Best New Special Event" in its population category at the annual Virginia Recreation and Park Society conference held in James City County on September 9, 2013.
Yorktown Maritime Weekend was an affiliate port for Opsail 2012 Virginia and held the event June 1-3, 2012 in Historic Yorktown. The event was organized and managed by York County's Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and the York County Tall Ships Committee. The Yorktown Maritime Weekend was the first occurrence of tall ships, military, and recreational boaters filling the Yorktown waterfront.
Over 39,700 visitors enjoyed the tall ships, military ships, static displays, farmer's market, music, parade of sail and great local food throughout the weekend.  The Maritime Weekend was one of the biggest events on the Yorktown waterfront since Riverwalk Landing opened in 2005.
