Breitbart Breaking News: Corey Stewart Admits To Funding Mysterious Group Behind Mailers

Fellow Virginians-

Breitbart News just broke this story and it's a big deal. The headline reads:

VA GOP LT. GOV. CANDIDATE ADMITS HE FUNDED

MYSTERIOUS GROUP BEHIND MAILERS

If you remember, I am the CPA from Prince William County that sent you an email regarding my concern with the TEA Party Federation's endorsement of Corey Stewart for Lt. Governor.

His FISCAL RECORD just isn't in line with the TEA Party's values and principles.  Scroll down to read my initial email about his tax record on the Board of Supervisors!

And now this story emerges!  We don't need these kinds of games in Virginia; DC is already overrun with them!

I have included the Breitbart article below and have included my in depth analysis of Corey's tax record below that.  More from me later!

On Friday night Corey Stewart, one of seven candidates seeking the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor in Virginia, admitted to a crowd of 50 Tea Party activists that he was not only "connected to" the mysterious Virginians for Limited Government (VLG) group that has paid for attack mailers on five of his opponents; he's also provided funding for the group.

Larry Nordvig, the Executive Director of the Richmond Virginia Tea Party who attended the Friday meeting, told Breitbart News on Monday that Stewart admitted his connection to VLG during a public question and answer period. Holding two of the VLG funded attack mailers in his hand, Nordvig described this back and forth he had with Stewart:

Nordvig Question: "Do you agree with these ads and did you have any connection to them whatsoever for the record?"

Corey Stewart Answer: "Am I connected? Yes. I have donated money to that organization."

Nordvig Question: "At least a couple of these candidates fought against these budget increases, specifically Steve Martin...The information on the flyer is not correct so this information is misleading. Will you do the right thing and publicly condemn these ads as false?"

Corey Stewart Answer: "No, I'm not going to do it. I play hardball. This is politics."

Sue Sadler, who is with a concerned citizens group in James City County and was present at Friday's event, told Breitbart News on Monday that "Nordvig's account is absolutely correct."

Carolyn Worssam, a member of the Richmond Tea Party, told Breitbart News on Monday "that sure is an accurate description of the conversation between Larry and Corey Stewart."

A third source, who is one of the 13,000 delegates to the convention that will select the Republican Party's nominee for Lieutenant Governor in Richmond on Saturday and was present at the Friday event, told Breitbart News on Monday "that's an accurate and balanced description" of the exchange between Nordvig and Stewart.

A fourth source, who was also at the meeting on Friday, told Breitbart News on Monday "that's completely accurate."

The meeting was held at Mimi's Cafe in Henrico, Virginia, near Richmond, and was moderated by Carol Stopps, a supporter of Mr. Stewart. Ms. Stopps told Breitbart News on Tuesday: "That was an accurate description of the conversation between Larry and Corey. Corey did not deny he knows the organization and contributed to the organization. In my opinion this is typical campaign material and there were no misstatements in the mailers."

Stewart's admission could be a violation of Virginia election law, which requires that independent expenditure political action committees not coordinate their activities with the campaigns of any candidates. It is unclear how much Stewart has contributed to VLG, since it has failed to file its Statement of Organization with the Virginia State Board of Elections.

The exact organizational structure of VLG remains unclear. On Monday the group changed its "about us" description on its website to say that it is a 501(c)4 tax exempt non profit corporation.

A search of Guidestar, the online source that provides information about non profit corporations that have received 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 tax-exempt status from the IRS shows no entry for "Virginians for Limited Government." By law, 501(c)4 organizations are prohibited from "primarily" engaging in political communications.

On Tuesday, Corey Stewart emailed this statement to Breitbart News: "Over the course of my life, I have supported and recommended several conservative organizations including the Family Foundation, Gun Owners of America, National Right to Work, Campaign for Liberty and Virginians for Limited Government to various people."

Stewart emphasized that neither he nor his campaign "had any coordination" with Virginians for Limited Government. "I am proud to support these like-minded organizations over the course of my political career," his email statement continued. "What these groups do, I have no control over.  Neither myself or my campaign have had any coordination with this group."

--------------------

THIS IS THE INITIAL EMAIL THAT I SENT OUT REGARDING COREY STEWART'S RECORD OF RAISING TAXES:

Virginia Republicans-

Hello, my name is John Gray and I have been a resident of Prince William County for 25 years, a small business owner, a self-employed CPA, and a COMMITTED fiscal conservative.  Anyone who knows me will tell you that I don't go around slinging lies and half -truths...that just isn't the way I operate.  I am emailing you today with the facts, and facts alone, because I am SICK AND TIRED with politicians getting away with covering the truth. I've been vocal about this for years in Prince William County (just ask anyone) but it's time to spread the message throughout the Commonwealth.  So I am emailing you today, the leaders in the Virginia GOP and conservative movements, to make sure you are all well informed.

The other day, I received an email about the TEA Party Federation's endorsement of Corey Stewart for Lt. Governor which stated that Corey has a  "...strong grasp of constitutional principles of limited government and individual liberty...".

I'm sorry, friends, but that just isn't true. In fact, the exact OPPOSITE is true.

It pains me to say this but I've got to be blunt.....

The Virginia TEA Party Federation has made a HUGE mistake endorsing Corey Stewart for Lt. Governor.

I have been following Corey's political career since he broke onto the scene in the early 2000's.  The glossy mailers and email rhetoric do not match up with his voting history in Prince William County.  How the TEA Party Federation never researched his voting record is beyond words - and I'm so very disappointed.  Worse yet, the TEA Party Federation has allowed Corey to LIE and get away with it.

Don't believe me? I spent hours pulling the data on the attached chart to prove my claims.  Please see the chart below!

Note:  2013 Revenues are estimated, 2007 Corey elected Chairman of the Board

1.      Look at the chart, last column, every time Corey could have voted for a tax decrease, he voted No; every time he could vote for a tax increase he voted Yes (except FY 2012 - just before his announced for Lt. Governor)

2.     Since Corey Stewart has been elected (FY 2005 - FY 2013)

a.      Tax Rates have increased 12.4%

b.     Tax Revenues have increased 52.3%, in spite of the Great Recession!

3.     Since Corey Stewart has been Chairman on the BoCS (FY 2008 - FY 2013)

a.      Tax Rates have increased 52%

b.     Tax Revenues have increased 18.6%

c.      Keep in mind this time period was in the worst recession in history and Corey increased county revenues and taxes, clearly anyone can see there's NO CUT.

But in Corey's email the other day he writes, "I have cut $143 million from the Prince William County Budget, reduced taxes by 8.5%" - THIS IS A BOLDFACE LIE and I can't believe the TEA Party Federation has bought the lie.  Even the County Executive publicly admitted that this wasn't a budget cut!! It's black and white; it's in the public record.  If I can find it, why can't the TEA Party Federation?

There's more:

Lt. Governor Candidate Corey Stewart claims to have run a fiscally conservative county. Really?  Then why did he agree to spend $44 million in taxpayer money on a cultural arts center?  The TEA Party wants the government to focus on "core services".  Can any of you tell me that a cultural arts center --$44 million -- is a "core service" of government?

If that isn't enough, Corey sat back and allowed Board of Supervisors members to have access to slush funds - we conservatives in PWC call it, "walking around money", which they doled out most times to community organizations that could prove beneficial for them in future elections.  He didn't do a thing about these slush funds until some real PWC conservatives turned up the heat. Check here: http://www.jeffersonpolicyjournal.com/?p=1504

Since becoming Chairman of the Board, Corey has consistently strong-armed donations from developers who are looking for a favorable result from the Board.  Need money to renovate your baseball stadium?  Donate to Corey! The Potomac Nationals are one of his biggest donors - http://www.vpap.org/committees/profile/money_in_details/1931?donor_id=139528&end_year=2012&filing_period=all&lookup_type=year&start_year=2006 .  Coincidently, many of these donations came in at times when the baseball team was looking for county funds to renovate their fields. It's all black and white, it's easy to find.

Take a look at some of the donations that he's gotten over the years -- http://www.vpap.org/committees/profile/money_in_industry2/1931?end_year=2012&filing_period=all&lookup_type=year§or=15&start_year=2006 - as a Supervisor nearly $500,000 from the real estate/construction industry has gone to his Chairman's account over the last 7 years and according to VPAP over $233,000 in just 16 months from real estate/construction industry has gone to his Lt. Governor's account, http://www.vpap.org/committees/profile/money_in_industry1/2463?start_year=2012&end_year=2013&lookup_type=year&filing_period=all.  We conservatives in PWC call it "The Stewart Shakedown".

There's so much more, but I have to ask, how could all of this be overlooked?

Corey doesn't understand what the TEA Party stands for and he certainly won't fight for the values and principles that they spend day and night fighting for!  This endorsement scares me.  I know that the TEA Party hasn't written off low taxes and fiscal responsibility from their platform.  I know that they are still fighting for those things.  That is why I don't know how the candidate that's least supportive of lower taxes and fiscal responsibility got the TEA Party Federation's endorsement!

I'm demanding this endorsement be retracted for the above-mentioned reasons.  I am so committed to fixing this injustice that I am pledging to spend the next several weeks leading up to the convention spreading the word about Corey Stewart and suggest you do the same.  Why?

Because Corey Stewart is a threat to conservatism and is dangerously close to fundamentally changing the Republican Party of Virginia into something that will hurt us fiscal conservatives for years to come.

For me, it's as easy as ABC - ANYBODY BUT COREY!
