VCDL's meeting schedule: http://www.vcdl.org/meetings

Abbreviations used in VA-ALERT: http://www.vcdl.org/help/abbr.html
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Legislative Update
2. Reminder: Roanoke supper meeting coming up on Tuesday
3. David Sayen's son's surgery was a success
4. We have a winner! Results of Roanoke area drawing
5. New company: Virginia Self Defense Law PLC
6. SHORT NOTICE: Daily Press wants to talk to some CHP holders in their area

***************************************************
1. Legislative Update
***************************************************

As predicted, the Senate passed the version of Delegate Carr's "celebratory gunfire" bill, HB 810, that was modified in the Senate Courts of Justice committee to match its original form. Better than predicted, the House rejected HB 810 by 98 to 0!

Because there are now two differing versions of HB 810, if the House and Senate refuse to budge, which I think will be the case, a conference committee consisting of 3 Senators and 3 Delegates can be created to attempt to work out a compromise. I don't see an acceptable compromise being possible and hopefully HB 810 will be killed.

SB 65, Senator Marsh's matching version of HB 810 as it left the Senate, comes before the House Courts of Justice on Monday afternoon. It is our hope that SB 65 gets killed as well.

-

On Friday SB 377 passed out of the House Militia, Police, and Public Safety committee UNANIMOUSLY and heads to the House Floor on Monday: SB 377 is Senator Reeve's bill that gives gun dealers the *option* to check a gun for stolen when they acquire it from a non-dealer.

***************************************************
2. Reminder: Roanoke supper meeting coming up on Tuesday
***************************************************

From Board member Al Steed Jr.:

VCDL will have a supper meeting on Tuesday, February 25 at:

ODD FELLOWS LODGE
2615 ORANGE AVE (460 EAST)
ROANOKE VA 24012

Fellowship starts at 6:30 PM---a FREE HOT DOG SUPPER will start at 7 PM. Several nice DOOR PRIZES will be given away--you MUST be present to win!

The meeting is open to the public, so bring along a friend.

Speaker will be PHILIP VAN CLEAVE, President of VCDL, who will talk about current important legislative events here in Vrginia.

We respectfully request a RSVP to al@vcdl.org with the number of people in your party so proper food; tables and chairs will be on hand. LOCAL members are asked to bring a side dish —salad, deserts or such, to share with others.

DIRECTIONS:

2 Miles EAST of I-581 on ORANGE AVE (460 EAST), just past the "BP" station on the RIGHT. The driveway to the lodge is on the LEFT-- beside COMMANDO SUPPLY. The lodge is above and behind Commando Supply. If you go past White Tire, you have gone too far.

Come out for a fun evening!

***************************************************
3. David Sayen's son's surgery was a success
***************************************************

David Sayen's little boy, Andrew, just had successful heart surgery! David is one of our gun show coordinators out in the Shenandoah Valley area.

From David:

"I wanted to thank you guys personally for all the prayers and well wishes for Andrew. His surgery was successful as far as removing the blockage and now he is on the road to recovery. He is very sore and a bit overwhelmed by it all, but he is taking it in stride. My wife and I greatly appreciate everyone who prayed for my son and it is comforting to be in St. Mary's Hospital Building (Mayo Clinic). There is a nice Chapel downstairs and my wife and I sent some prayers back your way in thanksgiving for all of the support."

***************************************************
4. We have a winner! Results of Roanoke area drawing
***************************************************

From Board member Al Steed Jr.:

AND THE WINNER IS------#3980, a Mr. LINDSY from LYNCHBURG, for our February 18 drawing!

Mr. Lindsy has been contacted. He will be able to fill out the proper paperwork at TRADER JERRY'S in SALEM later this week and claim his prize! A nice prize: one each RUGER SR9 AND RUGER SR9-C! [PVC: those are the same models recently villainized in a video by the anti-gun Violence Policy Center.]

We thank TRADER JERRY'S, located at 724 West 4th Street, Salem and 34 Claypool Hill Mall, Cedar Bluff, for their support of VCDL and this drawing!

***************************************************
5. New company: Virginia Self Defense Law PLC
***************************************************

Virginia Self Defense Law PLC (VSDL) is a new company that provides an experienced Virginia defense attorney for a retainer. It is a good idea to have an attorney on retainer in case you find yourself in need of a defense attorney.

From their web site:

Why VSDL?

• Not a national plan, we are Virginia attorneys who know Virginia law.
• An actual legal retainer plan, not insurance, VSDL won't farm your case out to the lowest bidder.
• VSDL is the first law firm in the Commonwealth of Virginia to concentrate solely on self defense law.

What does a VSDL membership mean?

• Peace of mind
• Your attorney one phone call away, 24/7, 365 days a year.
• No out of pocket costs for our attorney.
• Periodic updates on gun and self-defense law including updates from the general assembly.

—————————————————

I believe you will recognize some of the attorneys in the company:

NOTE: While the initials are similar, VSDL is NOT affiliated with VCDL.

Winter Storm Preparations

Our area is under a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service from 1:00 PM today until 7:00 PM on Thursday.  The temperature will generally remain in the mid-to-low 30s, heading into the mid-20s at night.  Please use caution when venturing out in the next few days. Below are some tips for staying safe during this storm:

General

* The snowfall predictions continue to vary, with anywhere from 1 to 4 inches being predicted for the region, but the general consensus is that the snow will be heavy and wetThis is the kind of snowfall that tends to cause trees to fall and can do significant damage to power lines.

Be sure you have enough non-perishable food and clean drinking water in the event that the power outage lasts up to 48 to 72 hours.

Additionally, be sure you have enough batteries for flashlights and other battery-operated devices, as well as a first-aid kit available for emergencies.

* Be sure to fill up your gas tanks, as the winter conditions may make getting around very difficult for at least the next day or two.

* Be sure to stay at least 30 feet back from downed wires and report them to your electric providers.

* If you do use a generator, be sure to follow the safe operating procedures, and never operate a generator inside your home or in an enclosed space, such as a garage. If using portable or camp-type stoves or lanterns for cooking and lighting, ensure that the area is adequately ventilated.

* Additional Information is available on the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's website

Transportation

VDOT has already begun to treat the major roads throughout the Commonwealth in preparation for the storm to try to make sure that the interstates and primary roads can be cleared quickly during and after the storm.

We urge motorists to please try to avoid driving during the storm, as most accidents happen within the first 2 hours after a snow storm starts. To keep updated on road conditions, you can call 511, go to www.511virginia.org, or download the 511 mobile app.

* To keep up with the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) progress in plowing, please see the following
information packet, which provides information on VDOT's plan for snow removal, as well as contact numbers to check on their progress. You can also visit the following site to check on the general status of VDOT's plowing efforts.
