August 17, 2012

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Learn more about birds during Bird Walks led by Bill Williams on fourth Saturdays from August through December, from 7 to 9 a.m. at New Quarter Park.
Williams is a well-known birder and former educator with the Williamsburg-James City County School system who is currently director of education with the Center for Conservation Biology of the College of William and Mary.
Williams has inspired many area residents to get excited about birds and to learn to identify them by field marks and calls. During walks he will point out osprey, heron, ducks, eagles, and hawks on Queens Creek and will help participants learn to listen for and spot songbirds in the park's woodlands and meadows. The free walks along the park trails will intrigue young and old as they enjoy the area's natural environment.
New Quarter Park is located in upper York County at 1000 Lakeshead Drive, next to the Queens Lake neighborhood. For more information, call York County Parks and Recreation at 757-890-3500 or New Quarter Park at 757-890-5840.

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

The York County Historical Committee, in cooperation with the York County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, is proud to present the fourth lecture in its York County Civil War Lecture Series.
The presentation, "The Halfway House in Tabb During the Civil War," will be held in the Board Room of York Hall, 301 Main Street, Yorktown, on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. The speaker is local historian Robert Carol Emerson.
Over the last 18 years, Mr. Emerson researched the history of the Tabb community of York County, with some of the data being published in various newspaper articles. Recently, Mr. Emerson combined these articles with other unpublished information in a book titled, "Tabb in Retrospect." The chapters on the Halfway House and the Civil War form the core of the book and the basis of Mr. Emerson's presentation, which is free and open to the public.
Four more lectures remain in the series:
-- Sept. 16, 2012 – "Union Army Census of the Colored Population of York County, March 1865." Local historian and retired York County educator, Russell Hopson, will follow some of the contraband families as they began new chapters in their lives after the Civil War. Mr. Hopson is a long-time supporter of and speaker at numerous York County Black History Celebrations.
-- Oct. 21, 2012 – "Medical Problems on the Peninsula." Author, historian and historical interpreter, T. A. "Doc" Wheat, will talk about the Confederate troops who initially defended Yorktown and the "deadly enemy" they encountered (and it wasn't the Yankees).
-- Nov. 4, 2012 - A Prelude to "Kiss My Little Girls – 1861." Jeff Toalson, historian and author of three Civil War-era books, will provide some special insights into his research and how he came to know the intriguing story of Richard and Mary Watkins. Richard Watkins, Prince Edward County lawyer and former Confederate cavalry captain (portrayed by Mr. Toalson), will join us for a visit on the front porch and recall stories of the conflict. Mr. Toalson will capture your interest and prepare you for the upcoming performances of one of his most popular works.
-- Dec. 16, 2012 – "The Civil War - A Woman's Cause." Local historian and historical interpreter Sharleen Leigh West-Carr will provide insight into the role of women during the war. Ms. West-Carr is currently the chairman of the North-South Skirmish Association Costume Committee and makes Civil War period clothing.

If you would like more information about this Civil War lecture series, or you would like information on how you can volunteer with the Historical Committee or the Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, please call 757-890-3508 or visit www.yorkcountyhistoricalcommittee.org.

New book explores little known York County history

August 7, 2012

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

The York County Historical Committee recently published a new book, "York County History: Essays and Memories," which focuses on 400 years of African American history in York County.
It is a collection of articles, essays and oral history transcripts from the colonial period through the Civil War era, and into the 20th and 21st centuries. Included is information about the first Africans to arrive in the Virginia colony as indentured servants, the creation of an economic system based on slave labor, the role of African Americans in the Revolution and the Civil War, and the development of post-war African American communities.
This is the second book published by the Historical Committee. The first, "Fact Sheets of York County History," is a compilation of writings by the late Dick Ivey, local historian, author and speaker. It contains over 40 articles and covers a wide range of subjects dealing with York County's long and illustrious history. Subjects include "Kiskiak Indians and the Europeans," "The Early Churches of Yorktown," "Old Yorke Village," and "Yankees in Yorktown."
Both books are available for purchase at the Gallery at York Hall and the Yorktowne Shoppe on Main Street in Yorktown, or by calling 757-898-0782. For more information on the Historical Committee and how it serves the community, visit www.yorkcountyhistoricalcommittee.org.

Peninsula Tea Party | USDA Declares Meatless Monday

PTP Wire | USDA Declares "Meatless Mondays"

Alexander

Welcome to the Peninsula Tea Party Weekly Wire! The Wire provides information about events and legislation that you may not get otherwise.

This week's theme is the meat, poultry and dairy industry, mainly poultry. We discuss the Department of Agriculture's latest stance on meat, a man in Roswell who killed himself and a local man whose trying to get county code changed.

In addition, we can celebrate another Tea Party victory.

USDA Declares "Meatless Monday"

In an internal newsletter, the USDA encouraged employees to participate in "Meatless Monday". After an outcry from the livestock industry, they rescinded their position. This is an indication that more regulations and controls will be placed upon the production of meat and dairy.

How did we get from Meatless Mondays to suppressed meat production?

According to the United Nations, livestock generates more greenhouse gases than...transportation.

Kansas Senator Jerry Moran spoke about "Meatless Monday" on July 25th. According to Senator Moran, meat and dairy production has a large environmental impact and it waste resources.

"...while a vegetarian diet could have a beneficial impact

on a person's health and the environment, many people

are not ready to make that commitment. Because Meatless

Monday involves one day a week, it's a small change that

could produce big results. "

United Nations Discusses Small Farms

In February 2012, The United Nations held an International Agricultural Development Conference to discuss the role of the small farmer. IFAD President, Kanayo Nwanze states that government's role is to ensure small farmers and everyone living in rural areas must realize their potential.

Rwanda's President, "...with the right policies and that at which, investment, we can increase food production while protecting our environment."

According to a NYT Article in 2008, "meat is something people are encouraged to consume less of, as the toll exacted by industrial production increases, and becomes increasingly visible." The United Nations states, "livestock production generates nearly a fifth of the world's greenhouse gases - more than transportation."

There are too many resources used in the production and consumption of meat and poultry products. With policies and ordinances geared toward controlling, if not eliminate, meat produced on farms.

Eric Danuser and the Concerned Citizen's of the Historic Triangle are fighting for his property rights. Last year, Chickahominy Haven resident Eric Danuser decided to get chickens. As he and his family acclimated to chickens, a neighbor complained to city officials.

Zoning codes do not allow Eric to keep chickens on his own property and he hopes to get city officials to change county code. If the Planning Commission is consistent with United Nations guidance, they will not change zoning codes.

As stated before, poultry and meat production contributes to environmental issues. Recently, York County, Poquoson and other communities have fought similar property rights issues concerning farming and aquaculture.

To help Eric and his family with their property rights issue, please sign the petition below.
